CIRM Identifies Training Grant Recipients

The California stem cell agency has identified the recipients of the $10.8 million in training grants. They include: The Buck Institute, USC, California State University campuses at Fullerton, Northridge and San Bernardino and city colleges in Berkeley and San Francisco.     While I think that training California kids in skills that could help them find jobs and aide to Ca's state schools is probably a good thing, I don't understand why CIRM's investing over $10M at 50K/head at this juncture. In the beginning perhaps, but now I don't know. I thought that the primary focus for the remaining 4 yrs was to generate progress towards therapies from stem cell technology post haste. New training grants won't contribute to that IMHO. For these kids to have jobs out of school, the stem cell field has to be able to generate them. That means tangible progress...unless everyone wants jobs forever funded by taxpayers.
